Ministry: Nord Stream 2 AG to decide on pipe construction restart

MOSCOW, Aug 12 (PRIME) -- Nord Stream 2 AG will decide on restart of construction of the Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline assuming its own technical capabilities, Sergei Belyayev, director of the second European department of the Foreign Ministry, told PRIME on Wednesday.

“Speaking of the decision to restart the project aimed boosting supplies of Russian pipeline gas to the European consumers in the Danish waters it will be made by Nord Stream 2 AG consortium on the basis of their existing technical capabilities,” he said.

On August 5, German environment protection organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) sent a claim to the Supreme Administrative Court of Greifswald asking it to revise the terms of the use of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline due to new scientific data concerning methane emissions. Operator of the project Nord Stream 2 AG took the claim in consideration and promised to study the case.

The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom is implementing the project together with Germany’s E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, OMV, and France’s Engie. The length of the pipeline’s route exceeds 1,200 kilometers.
